Phobia Exhibition

Exhibit Statement

Exhibiting the complexities of fear and phobias, Kelsi’s artwork explores the influence of fear and anxiety, and how these emotions can either hinder or stimulate growth. With a series of traditional and sculptural oil paintings she urges viewers to confront discomfort and angst using vivid imagery. Through manipulation of conventional forms, she seeks to provoke thought and emotional responses in those who view her art.

Kelsi has an avid interest in psychology such as the interactions and effect of visual stimuli on the brain. Exploring the practice of exposure therapy to overcome such fears and phobias using gradual exposure of the phobic stimuli. Delving into these topics through art has helped Kelsi personally and she believes it can help others as well. Though the phobias depicted may not all be a personal fear of hers, she continues to explore such topics to gain perspective to better understand those around her. Fear and phobias are subjective as both genetic and environmental factors may contribute to their development. Though many fears can be seen as an evolutionary trait to keep humans safe, phobias can be debilitating and irrational. Overcoming both fears and phobias is easier said than done but it can allow an individual to flourish.

Kelsi’s experiences and curiosity with psychological themes have inspired her art progressively throughout her time in the BFA, as art has encouraged her to explore her own emotions. This final body of work was created in order to make room for reflection and contemplation on fears, and what it means to exist for us all.
